Level 1 Certificate in Exercise Studies
(Health for Life 1)

The Health for Life (Level 1) course is designed to help you develop your understanding of how to get fitter, improve dietary intake, reduce stress and develop a healthier lifestyle. This course is suitable for anyone, irrespective of fitness levels, as it provides useful information on how to support your own exercise programme, whether you are just starting out or regularly exercising. The content will provide useful facts on how to exercise safely and effectively, and the diary will provide you with a template to help record any exercise you undertake.

Course information:

- A distance learning/home study programme to complete in your own time.

- Can be completed in as little as 6 weeks.

- Fully supported by a participating further education college.

- No attendance at college required.

- Receive a level 1 college certificate upon completion.

What does the course consist of?

- Upon enrolment you will receive a Health for Life (Level 1) course pack.

- The pack includes three units (comprising of a workbook and an assessment).

Unit 1: The principles of exercise and fitness

Unit 2: Safe and effective exercise

Unit 3: Developing your own exercise programme


- Complete each Unit assessment in turn:

Unit 1: 20 multiple choice questions

Unit 2: 20 multiple choice questions

Unit 3: Exercise diary where you record exercise activity over 3 weeks.

- All assessments are marked by a designated college tutor.

- Feedback, advice and guidance is provided by phone and/or e-mail.


What will I learn?

The course provides a diverse understanding of the following:

- The impact exercise has on different parts of the body.

- How diet, nutrition, drugs, alcohol and smoking affects the body.

- Safe and effective methods of exercise.

- Correct exercise techniques and how to implement them.

- How to create a exercise programme and tailor it to your specific objectives.

What are the benefits of the course?

The course will show you the benefits of exercise and provide a useful tool to help you understand how to exercise more effectively and hopefully more regularly. The knowledge you gain can also be passed to your family members and friends and your achievement will be recognised with a college certificate upon completion.

Progression opportunities

Once you have completed this course you may be able to undertake a variety of other related courses, such as the Health for Life (Level 2) Certificate in Exercise and Nutrition or the (Level 2) Certificate in Nutrition and Health (Healthy Eating).
